The Fairmont Winnipeg has perfected a “gentlemen’s club lite” feel in The Lounge at The Fairmont, with dark paneled wood and dusty greys – perfectly reflecting this classic cocktail culture. Filled with the local and visiting business-suit crowd (with the occasional visiting celebrity thrown in for good measure), this bar sees its fair share of martinis (again with the 007 thing), Manhattans, and Scotch – they have an enviable collection – leave the bartenders’ capable hands. Try a Perfect Manhattan, made with precision and care, or a glass of the 25-year-old Macallan single malt Scotch whisky at $60 CAD per shot, if your pocket allows. If not, there’s no shame in ordering the $6 CAD glass of Famous Grouse. Just sayin’.
But here’s an insider tip that will bring you to the cusp of leaving that classic genre without straying too far: Mike the bartender told us that the staff favorite is the Diablo, made with fresh ginger puree, your choice of reposado, crème de cassis, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, a splash of soda and a garnish of candied ginger. Now that's a cocktail worth straying for.
The Fairmont Winnipeg offers reasonable rates starting at $189 CAD for a Fairmont King room in September.
