We did a quick check for our current location near Santa Monica, Calif. and despite Kayak spelling Pacific Palisades wrong, the app also turned up some pretty poor options both brand-wise (Marriotts, Holiday Inns, nothing boutiquey) and price-wise. And some hotels are kind of far away. For example, the Loews Hollywood is a good 30-40 minutes away, even longer in traffic.
You could, however, compare the rates found on other booking sites as well as the hotel right there within the app so that's nice but nothing got our pulses racing like HotelTonight which offers a Beach Cities category for Los Angeles with several options in Santa Monica. (Hotel geeks like us have been known to just randomly check hotel rates on HotelTonight in different cities...just for fun.)
The one advantage that Kayak does have is that it features over 300,000 hotels on its app and it works for several cities in Europe. Not all of these will opt for the same-day booking function but it is a larger inventory to choose from. Still, there's room for a ton of improvement. Until then, we'll stick with HotelTonight.
Have you booked a hotel room for that night on either Kayak or HotelTonight? What was your experience like? Share it with the rest of us in comments below!
