1 Hotel Under $100: Jake's, Jamaica

There's travel talk everywhere about how expensive it'll be to fly and drive this summer, so there has to be some savings somewhere, yes? The most obvious place will be in hotel rates, and so our gift to you this week will be one hotel a day that comes in under $100 a night. Now, we're not saying every place will be of Ritz quality, because then it would be...well, the bloody Ritz. But the places will be nice enough for you to sleep at night.

Our Pick: Jake's

In this quiet South Coast fishing village, a world away from Montego Bay, is a hippy-dippy cliff-side resort that's a mix of earth-toned rooms, pastel-colored cottages, and modest villas with amusing names like "Seapuss" and "Sweet Lip". This place was made for easy-does-it travelers who come to Jamaica to inhale the laid-back vibe (yeah, you thought we were going to say something else) and wholeheartedly embrace the "no problem, mon" motto, which they'll find at the on site bar where locals like to mingle over rum and yes, reggae.

The mini-resort is awash with funky details that whisper "global chic" rather than scream "Caribbean cliche". A minaret-shaped window here and a Mayan weaving there bring a sense of the unexpected thanks to the hotel's creator, theatre-set designer Sally Henzell.

There are traditional comforts of home in every room from mini fridges to iPod docking stations. But, as a reminder that guests are at Jake's to chill out, you won't find TVs or phones. However should you freak out at the idea of being completely unplugged, the Media Room has one flat-screen television and WiFi and a desktop computer (they encourage you to leave your laptop home!) so you can check in for a sec before heading to yoga, the custom-tiled seawater pool or swimming in the turquoise-blue waters at Jack Sprat Beach.

Rates begin at $95 per night.
