Waaay, way back in 2009, we reported on an in-the-works project known as Hotel Palomar Phoenix, to be housed in a 34-story mixed use building known as CityScape. Well, that development took some twists and turns, but now the hotel is finally set to open on June 5 with starting rates of $149/night.

The Downtown Phoenix Journal is reporting that all 242 rooms will have a "desert-infused palette" of espresso brown, gray, beige and "pops" of orange, and its new GM, Jim Hollister, even compares the hotel's stark design to "that show Mad Men."

Although we personally don't let ourselves get too caught up in surface things like paint, wallpaper and fixtures unless the hotel has the goods to back them up. Which, like many Kimpton hotels before it, this one does.

A ton of meeting space (15,000 square feet to be exact), free WiFi, a 3rd-floor outdoor pool, a 2nd-floor restaurant known as Blue Hound Kitchen, and Kimpton's signature "Wines of the World" 5pm cocktail hour will all play into the hotel's hype as it debuts next month in a city that tends to host a lot of conventions and events. This year alone, AZCentral notes that the Phoenix Convention Center is expecting almost 200,000 people; and in 2015, Phoenix will host the Super Bowl.

One last little touch we like is the artwork found in the rooms, like the above painting by local artist John Randall Nelson, depicting a long-horned steer with a blue face. We doubt we'd find that kind of local shout-out at a W Hotel, which, interestingly was supposed to open here, but plans fell through.

Welcome to the neighborhood...

We're excited to see the Palomar opening so soon, and think it will be a great addition to downtown Phoenix.  However, in the name of good ol' business competition, The Clarendon Hotel will ALWAYS beat the rates at the Kimpton Palomar Phoenix by 25%, and our rooms include our complimentary wine hour each evening, covered parking, Internet, long distance/international calls, unlimited bottled water, free snacks and drinks available at the front desk, in-room Keurig coffee machines, morning newspaper, access to our fitness facility, access to UltraFit Boot Camp, access to Gold's Gym Elite, rooftop Yoga sessions on Sundays, Flamenco dance lessons on Wednesdays, and four pool passes.  Compare this to other Central Phoenix hotels where parking+internet+water alone cost up to $56/night!  Upon request, we will even place a mid-century modern fish bowl in your room with two goldfish companions named Clare and Don for your relaxation and enjoyment.

Looks nice but.....

... you have to be much better than "nice" to top our local boutique hotel, The Clarendon. They have set the bar pretty damn high. Gotta love the "local favorite".

where's the fun?

As a single dude who likes to have a good time, I too am a Clarendon loyalist. The originality, and non-corporate vibe are impossible to duplicate, even at twice the price. The environment is inviting, and encourages people to really enjoy the facility. I've stayed at The W, and other high end chain hotels, and they totally lack the fun factor.

Actors World Wide,love the Clarendon

Its a Tough Act To Follow, but youre welcome to try!

Clarendon Hotel

See the name above? That is the name the locals like to see. Locals are very loyal to place that give great service, great prices and great facility.

coolness factor at Clarendon can't be beat!

My grown children and their friends wouldn't visit as often if I didn't have The Clarendon to lure them in...completely unique...the pool, the bar, the wonderful rooms, the view from the roof.  I use it as a bribe.  And it works every time!  (they're very user friendly to locals, too!)

A Great place

Hey all

I love this place. The staff is great , You will have a ton of fun and you are near so much stuff to do. Enjoy your self and haves great drink by the pool or in the restaurant.

Je ne sais quoi

While this new chain sounds nice, I think we Phoenicians need to  support our local businesses.  The Clarendon has a certain something that faceless hotel conglomerates don't get.  Whether your a local, or on vacation you cant help but fall for the congenial and super helpful front desk, for the Gallo Blanco's fish tacos, and the originality and fresh take on their decor....not too mention they're comfy beds.  It's my favorite place to go for a staycation.

Home Sick for the Claredon

Having just returned home to Bondi Beach, Australia after spending eight wonderful days at the Clarendon Hotel I am homesick ...for the Clarendon! This hotel has captured a relaxed, laidback, funky atmosphere together with top professionalism from the staff.

The hotel has captured something that is hard to write about as it is an experience that you have to have for yourself. I am not sure if any hotel could successfully compete with the Clarendon "style" as the Clarendon has its own vibes etched into every part of the place and it will be a hard act to follow.
