Okay so. Airport hotels aren't usually the most exciting places to pop into for an evening's rest, but occasionally we hit upon a diamond in the rough. Our latest awesome airport hotel trumps them all 'til now, and it comes from a city whose hotel game is tight: Hong Kong.

Specifically we speak of the Regal Airport Hotel at HKG, a building shaped like a capital letter "D," with the outward straight edge commanding the most enviable runway views at Hong Kong International Airport, beating even the main terminal with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Upon checking in for two nights a little over a week ago, we simply requested a "room with view of the airport happenings." And we got room 7178, which faces directly out the end of of one of the two main runways. For the better half of those two days at the Regal, airplanes landed constantly, meaning we could barely do anything but stand at our window, DSLR at the ready.

Regular rooms, with advance purchase, start at $150 per night, but If you're similarly inclined to planespot before hitting the sack, we recommend ponying up the dough for a junior suite on the corner (specifically rooms 7172 or 8172), which, we figured out, would have a view of the planes coming in to land, but as far out as over the water, on approach. Those begin around $500.

Bonus! This hotel has adopted the new 24-hour flexible stay policy, which means you're cool to stay in your room from, say, 9pm checking to 9pm the next night. Awesome.
