Germans may have a reputation for being buttoned-down types, but you’d never know it when visiting the Sofitel Munich Bayerpost’s hedonistic pool in their luxurious onsite spa. It is dark, inviting, and intimate.

Once you enter the wonderfully warm water, duck under the low-ceilinged overhang to your right to head into the main pool – a waterfall-filled spring with plenty of nooks and crannies for you to find your own private corner. Windows at eye-level give you a wee voyeuristic peek at the comings-and-goings of people in the sleek hotel lobby.

Now sneak back under and follow the curving, snakelike, dimly-lit tiled path to the next open space. You feel a sense of tingling anticipation as to what’s around the next corner. We felt like kids in an R-rated Disneyworld. And then, you feel it: Large whirlpool jets rushing directly up from the floor. It’s oh-so-tantalizingly risqué.

This is definitely one hotel pool that is enjoyable on one’s own or, preferably, with a special someone. However, be warned. Lest you have any naughty thoughts, cameras are there watching you AND your playful antics.

The Sofitel Munich Bayerpost is a beautifully designed hotel. Their pool is simply an extension of the overall aesthetic. A grey palette with lush shots of colour exists throughout the public spaces.

The chic hotel bar carries on seamlessly through to the outdoors, with individual fireplaces amidst the lounge seating. We had decadent, freshly-made strawberry cocktails during our stay – a different one for each night. Red, it seems, is the colour of amour at the hotel.

Nor do the luxe rooms disappoint. Automatic blinds in the bathroom can be deployed to cover the glass wall that separates the sleeping area from the bathing area, if one chooses. Oh – and there are Hermés toiletries. Sigh.

A random search for room prices in June brought up a rate of 255 Euros for a Superior room, but if you book in advance you can find rates as low as 200 Euros for a pre-paid rate in October. Time to pack that bathing suit!
