An Evening at The Library within NYC's New NoMad Hotel

The men at the doors wear Bespoken suits and thin, rust-color ties. Pass them and you're inside Manhattan's newest hotel: The NoMad. Keep going. Through the lobby and off to the left, pass the maître d' stand for the restaurant and keep going. Through the bar at the very back and to another left, there's a host. This is the man or woman you want to see about getting a seat in The Library, a lounge that's less a library and more a bar.

Last night was as good an evening as ever for sinking back into a tufted silk sofa, and so we found ourselves there...and learned a few things about the space.

For one, the menu is quite extensive (and you can see it in our photo gallery below). For another, the menu directs you to ask questions to "the librarian" (ah hem the servers) and, if you're feeling adventurous, to go with the $15 Bartender's Choice. Our friend did so and what came out was a pleasant variation on the first cocktail on the list: The Gilsey.

The drink pictured above is the "Bohemia," and we also downed a "Lady Johnston" (very tasty) and the nonalcoholic "La Piña." As far as food, we had:

· $8 Radishes, butter-dipped with fleur de sel. Holy moly who ever guessed such simple things could taste so well together?
· $16 Beef tartare with cornichons and horseradish. It's a very tiny portion, barely enough for a taste for two people. It'll only make you hungrier.
· $9 Sweetbreads croustillant with parsley. We love sweetbreads, really we do, but we've never had them presented this way, like spring rolls. While very tasty (and salty), it felt like there was hardly any substance to them. Again, very small portion barely enough for two to get a taste.

For a full experience at The Library, be ready to spend. We sure did, but it was worth it to get in on an impressive space before the somewhat secret place is found out and there's a waitlist. Walk into The Ace's lobby on any night and you'll see what we mean. Go soon, get dressed up a bit for it, and don't try to go upstairs; the second level is just for looks.
