Rachel Ashwell, the Queen of Shabby Chic, not only does furniture but she does hotels too. Well, she does at least one hotel, which is actually more a country bed and breakfast--The Prairie down in Round Top, Texas about an hour and a half from Austin.

You can read the story behind The Prairie and how Rachel Ashwell came about owning it here but as expected, the place is full of shabby chic decor like vintage fixtures, faded flowery linens, crystal chandeliers and even floral hats for the deer hanging on the walls.

My vision for the inn was to balance the sweeping, rustic, primitive soul of the architecture of the five houses and 46 acres of beautiful open landscape with a certain "Marie Antoinette" touch.

Comfy Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture sofas and crystal chandeliers are mixed with tattered lampshades, vintage fixtures and original floorboards. The taxidermy that came with the property has been brought into my fold by being crowned with lovely floral vintage hats.

Despite how you feel about the shabby chic style, The Prairie is quite a cool-looking B&B with four distinct properties for guests to stay in. These range from a little house with a downstairs/upstairs, two bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room, living room and two porches to a king studio cottage with a private terrace that overlooks a rose garden.

The Rangers Lounge is the communal area of The Prairie where folks check-in, eat breakfast, hang out and presumably, take careful notes of the shabby chic design.

Other amenities and shabby chic touches rounding out the place include flowers in jam jars, Molton Brown toiletries in the bath (they are Rachel's fave toiletries) and modern fixtures like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges and iPod docks in the guestrooms.

Rates for the property start around $245 a night which is refreshingly affordable as anyone who's ever been into a Shabby Chic will testify. But if you're looking to make a weekend trip to The Prairie, you should book way in advance. Right now, only next weekend is open and it won't be until May 11 that a weekend opens up again.

Finishing Touches

If you love shabby chic style, then you know that it is about carrying the look through the whole house is key to a beautiful home or in this case "hotel".

I have just followed the link to read more about the story behind the Prairie - the life long dream come true for Rachel Ashwell. It looks a truly amazing place to stay, even the outside is shabby chic and everything looks like its a finishing touch. Perfect!

I love the rocking horse in the background. Wondering what most caught your eye in the image above??
