We like to keep it fun but informative here at HotelChatter so our newest series, What is This? is devoted to odd-looking items in hotel rooms that upon first glance look as if they serve only a decorative purpose. But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.

Here's one highlight from our recent tour of Conrad New York's lobby. We admit, at first we couldn't quite wrap our head around this. Yes, it's some kind of staircase. But why all the bars? And where exactly does it go?

 A hotel staffer who happened to be passing by pointed out that the staircase actually leads up to one of the hotel's many ballrooms. We say many because after a quick glance at the website's rather confusing event space chart, we counted at least thirteen various ballroom space configurations. How many balls are these Conrad guests throwing anyway?

As for the bars, those are actually attached to the ceiling, and the staircase itself is suspended over the ground. We're fans of how the staircase manages to reference the suspended aluminum sculptures hanging in the lobby.

The staircase was roped off (doh!), but in the meantime, we'll just wait for our invite to the next ball to show up in our mailbox. E-invites are ok too!
