In its earlier days as The Elysian, the Waldorf Astoria Chicago was originally designed with the little black dress and Coco Channel in mind. On a recent visit, we were happy to see that none of this changed when The Elysian became the Waldorf Astoria this past February.

There’s the sunburst-shaped lobby chandelier inspired by a Channel brooch, touches of black in the furniture and artwork (really beautiful stuff hangs on the walls here), Tiffany-esque analog clocks on the bedside tables (a nice break from iPod madness), and everyday objects somehow beautifully amplified against muted backdrops.

But the crème de la crème was discovered in the bathroom beyond the shower door, where a simple nook in the shower wall sang out like a choir of angels.

Just a foot or so above the floor and only inches deep and wide, the nook was ever so thoughtfully designed with a woman’s shaving needs in mind. Imagine the possibilities! No more crouching, slipping and slopping around the shower to get your bare legs ready for that little black dress. Simply insert foot in secure nook and commence struggle-free leg shaving.

Whistling Morrissey’s “Such A Little Makes Such a Big Difference,” we felt a whoop whoop and high-five coming for the Waldorf Astoria and whoever had the idea to build the nook. What a clever nod to the little black dress, not to mention solid respect for women all over the world who grapple with leg shaving in hotel bathrooms. (Yeah, we might be reading into things a bit, but where bathroom needs are concerned, we pay close attention.)

P.S. Dudes, need not feel left out. Just head to the exquisite yet un-frilly spa for a traditional shave or a hot lava shell massage. Then, kick back in the plush man-cave-like lounge where giant leather lounge chairs and ottomans, dark-hued walls, and a flatscreen TV just above the fireplace beg two legs up and some manly chill time.

Room rates at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago currently start at $395. Go on and get your nook on.
