Thompson Hotels, Not Ace, Will Take Over 5 Beekman
This morning we speculated that another Ace Hotel is coming to New York City. But surprise, surprise! Instead of the Big Apple getting its second Ace, the city will now be home to SIX Thompson Hotels.
Not long after our story went up this morning, Thompson Hotels, which is a part of Commune Hotels and Resorts, went live with their announcement for the management contract of 5 Beekman, which included a statement from building owner:
“With its deep New York lifestyle hotel experience and growing international presence, we’re delighted to have chosen Thompson Hotels, an operator uniquely suited to capture the building’s inherent drama. We relish the opportunity to transform this one-of-a-kind building and adjacent parcel into a 297 room luxury boutique hotel with 90 residences” said Bruce Blum, president and co-founder of GB Lodging.
Our mind is going round in circles. A sixth Thompson Hotel in Manhattan? Yet Stephen Brandman, now CEO and co-owner of Commune Hotels and Resorts, told us that the feel of this hotel will be a little different from the other Thompsons in town due to the historic nature of the building.
As for the hotel's name--will it remain 5 Beekman or use its historical Temple Court moniker or will it be a branded Thompson?--he said they are working on that right now.
But while this might be Thompson's sixth hotel in the city, the boutique lifestyle hotel brand is still pretty pumped they landed such a hot piece of real estate. Brandman even called it one of the most exciting hotel projects going on in New York City right now.
And he teased us with more expansion news for Thompson by saying, "Global expansion will happen before you think." But we'll have more on that tomorrow.
