Andaz Will Be Tokyo-bound in 2014 (And Other News)

December 26, 2012 at 9:06 AM | by | Comments (2)

There's tons of hotel news flying around this week and we don't have time to give each and every story the love and attention it may deserve, so you will have to settle for some news briefs.

· Andaz Tokyo Will Aim High: If you thought Andaz Amsterdam and Andaz Savannah and Andaz Maui were the last scraps of Andaz news for a while, think again. Hyatt has just announced a brand new Andaz property opening in Tokyo's Toranomon business district in summer of 2014. The 164-room hotel will occupy the top six floors of a 52-story tower currently under construction, and, yes, there will be a rooftop bar. The hotel will also take over the 37th floor, which will be dedicated to an infinity pool, spa and fitness center. Though this location will be a first for Andaz, it will be Hyatt's fourth in Tokyo, and its ninth in Japan.

For the rest of today's hotel news, read on!

· Stalemate for Hyatt Regency Curacao: It's not all good news for Hyatt, though. In the latest episode of hostile hotel takeovers, owners of Hyatt Regency Curacao showed up two weeks ago and attempted to kick out Hyatt as manager of the hotel. According to a statement by the hotel, negotiations had been taking place between Hyatt and the owners since November, but the owners decided to take matters into their own hands and act in a "precipitous" manner (which, according to Hyatt, was also illegal). As of now, Hyatt cannot accept reservations for the hotel, or even respond to questions about existing reservations. Yeesh!

· Kimpton Adds Second LA Hotel: Kimpton added seven hotels to its portfolio in 2012, but, hey, what's one more? The playful boutique brand recently shocked the LA hotel scene by announcing its Kimpton-ization of the 74-room Hotel Wilshire. Having just opened the Hotel Palomar in Philly, Kimpton is on a bit of a crusade right now, and Los Angeles apparently ranked high on the company's to-do list. CEO Mike Depatie said he was "pleased to close out the year with our expansion in the highly-desirable Los Angeles market,” and said that the LEED-certified Hotel Wilshire "is a perfect fit for the Kimpton portfolio." A few minor updates will be made to the hotel, in addition to wine hour, animal print robes, and other Kimpton signature amenities.

· Fairmont is keeping busy, too, with the announcement of a new 170-room resort opening on the southern coast of Bali. Though the property isn't set to be finished until 2016, we're liking the few details that have been released so far. Like...? Fairmont Bali will be "perched on a bukit, or bluff", overlooking the Indian Ocean (we happen to know a little something about those incredible views). Plus a spa and an 18-hole golf course. Don't forget the white sandy beaches and a beach club offering a variety of water sports to while away the days. Interestingly, Fairmont's sister brand Raffles will also operate an 80-room property on the same resort.
