We love how Kimpton Hotels can get a little creative with their interior designs, but nothing prepared us for Hotel Monaco in Washington DC.

While there are 10 Kimpton hotels in the metro area, we loved that this 182-room hotel is a former 1842, neoclassical post office. We didn't realize history was the only thing we'd be experiencing.

We don't know what the designers were smoking, but we love the results. They are so visually overwhelming, our puppy companion didn't know what to do with herself. Luckily, the pet-friendly hotel provided a plush giraffe doll to keep her busy while we investigated the rest of the hotel.

The rooms are insanely trippy, with bold design pattern overlapping bold design pattern overlapping bold design pattern. Check out the third floor with vaulted ceiling in rooms.

We recommend strolling the second floor, where the president-head wallpaper and intense art with George Washington's face arranged by little ant-soldiers had us at hello. Now we know where Dali would have stayed had he ever visited DC, and we know where we're coming back to for the 2013 inauguration.

While rates generally hover around $400 this time of year, we found some for about $230. These are insane rates so get booking! Disclosure: Jimmy stayed as a guest of Kimpton, however, all sober opinions expressed are his own.
