Untold Delays Are Holding Up These Two NYC Hotels

The Hyatt Union Sq certainly looks finished...

Remember back in the summer when the leaves were on the trees and hotel rooftops flourished, and we were giddy with excitement about two new Manhattan hotels set to open in the fall, Hyatt Union Square and The Jade? In fact, we even went as far as naming the latter one of the best hotels to hit NYC in 2012.

But it looks like we may have jumped the gun on that one, as there's a chance The Jade won't even be opening until 2013. As for the Hyatt Union Sq, same deal. Delayed, delayed, delayed.

Now, we know how these things go. But what's strange to us is how both hotels are on the same street, in basically the same neighborhood in Manhattan, and both seem to be suffering from a case of chronic postponement. Almost like a game of chicken to see who can hold out the longest without ever opening. Is this the curse of opening a hotel on 13th Street?

Technically, we've been waiting the longest for Hyatt. Two years ago, we were told it would open sometime in 2011. Nope. Then it got pushed back to " late fall 2012." Now, the website says it's accepting reservations for March 1, 2013 and beyond. Which would certainly be nice, considering that from the looks of it, the hotel (pictured above) seems to be all, like, built and everything.

Further down the block, we visited the Jade at the end of October, and got a peek at a model room. It looked pretty good to us, but there was still evidence of some major installation work that needed finishing (as in, all of the rooms, plus the lobby). The place was still basically a construction site.

So while we were hopeful for a November opening, we kind of get now why the Jade's reps are telling us it might, possibly open this month, but could "potentially" be pushed to 2013.

Guess it's up to one of these hotels to break the curse. But which one will do it first?

Hyatt Union Square: will this be a Hyatt managed property or a franchise hotel?

Hurricane Sandy

Ever occur to anyone that this part of town got affected by Hurricane Sandy and had no light for 10 days (among other things)? I don't think you are a priority to the city when you have inspections in place that could have been delayed due to a Super storm. I'm sure when Hyatt opens, they will open with a bang... like expected. So let's sit tight and watch what happens... best things come to those who wait is what they say!
