Treehouse

When can a treehouse be both glamorous and sustainable? Four words: Hapuku Lodges and Treehouses. Located on the South Island of New Zealand, the property features completely sustainable living, while overlooking the pristine scenery of the Kaikoura region, about 2 hours north of Christchurch.

The lodges and tree houses were the brainchild of a family of architects and designers, so there's no shortage of thoughtful, functional design that looks great. Not only did they want to create a unique hotel that showcases the region's love of nature, they also sought to be an important cog in the local ecosystem.

The main accommodations are treehouses that hang 30 feet above the ground in the canopy of a Manuka grove. Don't worry: there isn't a rope ladder to climb, since each house has a staircase leading up to the luxurious digs. Inside, there are giant windows to take in views of the local mountains and the Pacific coastline, plus natural wood furnishings, all hand-crafted by local woodworkers that happen to be friends of the owners.

If sleeping in a treehouse isn't your thing, there are lodges on terra firma that feature the same attention to detail with furniture and luxury. For those that need a bit of relaxation while soaking up the scenery, there's even a Japanese soaking tub in each room.

Visitors to the lodges share the land with the family's deer and oil producing olive orchard. Which means that when dining in the restaurant the majority of the ingredients are locally sourced from either the on-site gardens or local farms. The hotel has a goal of being a zero-waste community and already composts all waste from the kitchen, but will be adding full recycling and reduction initiatives in the future.

For those of you that want to do more, the hotel offers packages that include a Maori tree planting ceremony and stargazing hike, complete with a stay in a treehouse and a meal consisting of 100% locally grown produce.

Room rates start at 472 NZD ($398 USD) for a night in a Lodge Room. If you have your heart set out for a 2-bedroom treehouse, you need to dig a little deeper since they start at 640 NZD (540 USD).
