British Columbia's Red Mountain Resort Adds Slope-side Sleeps

There are a few things to finish up, like installing a quad lift next summer � but British Columbia's Red Mountain Resort'snewest peak, Grey Mountain, is officially open for business.

The opening comes toward the tail end of an 8-year, $50 million overhaul which includes the addition of slope-side lodging which begins at $159 per night. Slalom Creek offers mostly 3-bedroom accommodations, each with a private hot tub and high ceilings. The adjacent lodge, which was also part of the project, houses cafes and restaurants for easy-access dining options.

It appears Red Mountain Resort has been spending its money well: Last year, the New York Times named it the �Top Ski Resort for the Extreme Skier� in their Snow Guide and the Toronto Star spoke well of its powder, trees, and steep runs, ranking Red Mountain as the #2 ski resort in the world.

The final part of the expansion, which started back in August, adds nearly 1,000 acres of in-bound terrain for the 2012-2013 season to the already existing 1,685, including a second volcanic-shaped peak (Grey Mountain) that allows for �3-D skiing,� or 360-degree skiing from a single lift. For the 2012-13 season, RED will shuttle riders to the top of Grey using an Alpina Sherpa (an oversized snowmobile-bus) with the intention of installing a quad chair next summer. RED�s new total acreage of 2,682 places it in the top three percent of all resorts in North America in terms of skiable acres (Jackson Hole in Wyoming, for example, has approximately 2,500 acres).

Fingers crossed for a solid snowfall this winter, but we think we'll wait until next year to check out Red Mountain when the new lift is up and running - the bus to the top of Grey Mountain can only shuttle nine at a time.
