Marriott's Double Trouble Hotel Tower Will Rise 750 Feet In The Air
With all the regular-sized hotels opening this winter in New York (see: Hyatt Union Sq, The Refinery, The Quin), it's easy to forget about Marriott's rather ambitious double hotel tower set to open on West 54th St, which we first reported on in early 2011.
While we'd initially been told the Nobutaka Ashihara-designed hotel would be completed in 2011, that obviously never happened. Now, The Observer reports that the tower has finally topped out at 750 feet, which The Real Deal points out is an impressive 34 feet higher than originally planned.
Guess those construction workers must have gotten a little carried away...
Meanwhile, no official opening date on the double hotel, which will house a Residence Inn By Marriott on top and a Courtyard By Marriott on the bottom. How they decided which brand got which end of the tower is slightly mystifying, though we imagine the process was similar to when we had to sort out top and bottom bunk with our little brother when we were younger: wrestle.
More to come on this killer view-tastic project as details emerge, though in the meantime, our friends at The Observer have kindly gone to the trouble of profiling a few buildings whose views will be blocked by the mammoth Marriott structure...enjoy!
