Manhattan's Canal Street Will Get A Hotel

The great Manhattan hotel takeover never sleeps. It's only the fourth day of the new year and already we've heard of at least two new downtown hotels opening in the next year or two. First up (and by far more aesthetically pleasing): a converted 1913 Beaux-Arts building on Canal St and Orchard St (above), set to become a 130-room hotel.

The 12-story landmark building recently sold for $36 million, and apparently attracted quite a few interested buyers—all of them with 'hotel' on the brain.

Because Canal St connects the pivotal Lower East Side neighborhood with TriBeCa and Greenwich Village, and until now had no hotels to speak of, it was technically ripe for the picking. We're just grateful a renovated beauty like this one is getting the spotlight, rather than some new construction with no ties to the neighborhood. If only all of New York could be so lucky...

The second on our radar this week is a stalled development, now back on track, sprouting up at 163 Orchard St, about six blocks north of the new Canal St project. This one, a 32-room hotel tentatively named Stories_NY makes far less sense to us, least of all because of its name the renderings (which can be seen here) are so mind-numbingly uninspired.

According to Bowery Boogie, though the foundations were laid in 2008, things haven't moved forward due to the recession and some prohibitive zoning laws. But now, with community board approval (wonder if these are the same peeps who gave Andre Balazs the go-ahead for his new baby uptown in Cooper Square), Stories_NY has gotten the green light.

But for what it's worth, our money's on Canal St.
