Olympics Scam Crackdown Targets People Selling Fake Hotel Rooms

The Olympics site in Stratford, London

Remember when we told you about the ongoing crackdown on scalpers hawking non-legit Olympics tickets? Well, the local po-po (or, would that be bo-bo, since we're talking U.K. bobbies?) are going after delinquents selling fake hotel rooms, too.

That's right: phantom hotel rooms. ESPN reports that 97 people were recently arrested for peddling scam tickets to the games and "nonexistent hotel rooms" to unfortunate parties looking to partake of Olympics fever in London.

U.K. Home Secretary Theresa May is quoted in the report, saying, "Police are sending a very clear message that we're not going to tolerate intrusions by organised criminals into the Olympic Games." Like we said, unless you've got £20,000 to spare or actually enjoy holing up in the dank cells, it's best to avoid partaking in third-party sales and other Olympics-related swindles.

The clink can't compare to the Z Soho or one of the city's other Gold Medal hotels by way of accommodations, after all.
