DUMBO Is Looking For A Few Good Developers

DUMBO is gearing up for a hotel of its very own. Maybe it will be called THUMBO (The Hotel Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a la THOR in the Lower East Side? Maybe not. Anyway, it's far too early in the game to be speculating on names—or even hotel brands—since the city's "request for proposal" was only released several weeks ago.

Now, they just need a developer to build the thing. According to The Observer, two buildings will go up at Pier 1 in DUMBO, housing a mixture of hotel rooms and apartments. And if the list of interested developers is anything to go by, we could be looking at a new Brooklyn hotel to rival the coolness of Hotel Wiliamsburg. Above all, though, the hotel will simply reflect the "culture," "vibrancy," and "views" characteristic of DUMBO's Brooklyn Bridge Park. Nothing like a little neighborhood pride.

Over at The Brooklyn Eagle, a reporter was worried about the involvement of a particularly DUMBO-savy developer named David Walentas. But other names on The Observer's list of interested developers include: Starwood, TEN Architectos (Hotel Americano), and Andre Balazs. With such a prime waterfront location, it seems like W could be a good fit.

As for The Observer's list of developers for the forthcoming 170-225-room hotel,

"The final pairings [of developers] might look nothing like this, but it presents some interesting options, especially because it would mean a new level of quality on the eastern shore of the East River.

And there is another point of note: Pretty much all the developers on this list have built major luxury projects on said waterfront, whether at Queens West, Hunter’s Point South (Related is doing the first phase) or Williamsburg."

We just hope DUMBO settles on something unique. If DUMBO gets its act together, maybe something will be up in time for our next hotel-hopping ferry excursion!
