If you look closely (or not that closely) at the document from the Manhattan Community Board #3, it clearly shows the Cooper Square Hotel, under the ownership of Andre Balazs, applying for the transfer of an existing liquor license. Which perfectly matches the rumored start date for the new ownership on September 1. Now, if only the hotel had just been a little more forthcoming from the start, we wouldn't have to go digging through these government papers.
So, what does this mean? Well, for now, not much. We've walked past the hotel quite a few times since the initial rumor, and haven't noticed anything different about the physical property. The Trilby's sign is still up (and its name appears on the liquor license application), and the hotel's website hasn't changed at all. We're just hoping Balazs decides to continue the hotel's stellar penthouse live music series.
Two week ago, this is what the hotel had to say:
"Klaus Ortlieb, the managing partner, does not have any news regarding the ownership of the hotel as this is not being disclosed."
If you have thoughts or news on the hotel's new ownership, don't hesitate to let us know about it!
