Morgans Hotel Group To Install The Mondrian Brand in London

Morgans Hotel Group has already had an established presence in London with their Sanderson and St. Martins Lane hotels but now it looks like they are taking their Mondrian Hotels brand across the pond as well.

Property Week reports that Morgans will turn the Sea Containers House along the Thames into a 358-room hotel. Interestingly enough, when the Sea Containers was first built in the 1970s it was intended to be a hotel but that plan was scratched at the last-minute and office space was built instead.

Now, the property's developer is itching to turn the place back into a mixed-use project which will include not just the Mondrian but offices, restaurants and retail space as well.

Located along the South Bank of the Thames near the National Theatre, The Tate Modern, the iconic OXO Tower and the Globe Theatre, the Mondrian London will have a lot to borrow from the area's local culture.

We just wonder if interior designer Benjamin Noreiga-Ortiz will continue his Alice in Wonderland-like work here (he also did the Mondrian Soho as well as the renovations for the Mondrian WeHo) or if Morgans will tap someone else to do the job.

Whoever does the interiors, Morgans seems pretty happy to have set up yet another shop in town. Morgans CEO Michael Gross, told Property Week:

“It’s rare to find such a good site for a hotel in the centre of a major city, close to many cultural attractions as well as business hubs.”

But considering that the building needs to undergo an entire overhaul, we're guessing this place won't be open for the Olympics.
