The Points Guy Asks, 'Is It Wrong To Clean Out the Hotel Minibar?'

August 17, 2011 at 5:32 PM | by | Comments (21)

The Points Guy aka Brian Kelly has long been a favorite hotel and travel expert of ours, especially since he's a whiz at figuring out how to get the most out of your credit card points, frequent flyer miles, hotel rewards and other loyalty programs when you travel.

And because he's such a genius at navigating the extremely confusing waters of loyalty program promotions, Brian has seen and done some pretty cool things this past year, one of them being obtaining Royal Ambassador status at InterContinental Hotels.

Aside from getting numerous perks upon arrival at an InterContinental Hotel such as room upgrades, instant check-in, fresh fruit and mineral water at arrival, VIP greeting, in-room welcome gift, one free pay TV movie per stay, complimentary newspaper and a late check-out, Ambassadors are also given free reign of the minibar. Meaning they can clean it out and not get charged a single penny.

But is that wrong? Allow Brian to show us exactly what he's struggling with in the video below.

Would you empty the minibar if you were an InterContinental Ambassador? Let us know in comments below!

I think they'll end the open minibar benefit if people abuse it and it no longer becomes cost-effective. Like anything else, use what you need and leave the rest. I mean it's a minibar in a Vegas hotel and your friends are coming over...I think it's safe to say that unless you and your friends are 12-steppers you're going to honestly work your way through that minibar. Enjoy.

do it

It's a perk for a reason. You think Intercontinental didn't consider this? I suppose if it was me, I'd think that maybe the cleaning ladies would think I'm a huge cheapo, cleaning everything out. But then I'd remember that they probably don't care. I will not touch the Tonic Water though, so at least there's that.

I agree with Jill Polster

" Like anything else, use what you need and leave the rest. "
 AND
"I think they'll end the open minibar benefit if people abuse it and it no longer becomes cost-effective."

There is no need to be greedy

Jealous!

And I thought I was pretty nifty obtaining InterContinental's PCR Platinum status...

I say use/take what you use/need and leave the rest. What a great perk.

Almost.

Free "rein," not reign.

Also

If you are going to take the mini bar stuff, are you going to take the left over toilet paper ?

What a Royal A-hole

What a jerk.  Royal Ambassador status was designed for business travelers not some penny ante scam artist.  Shortly these benefits will be eliminatd due to this sort of abuse.

But what can one expect from The Points Guy aka Brian Kelly?  This is the same clown who instructs readers to sign their dogs and cats up for additonal credit cards and lie about having a business to get a business credit card.

I suspect the Mr. Kelly is also knowledgeable in other areas such as welfare fraud and tax evasion.  This punk should go find a real job.

Another RA Opines

I am also a Royal Ambassador.

What is little understood is that you do not get only one free minibar, you get as many as you can drink, unlimited refills.

My person record is seven, we tanked basically seven complete minibars during a two-night stay in European city last September, the cost at full price of the drinks we consumed was over $2,000. In that case we did consume them all in the room, all our friends came over, and I kept calling for a refill every hour or two.

In another European city on a single night weekend stay (costing 83 Euros), with 6pm checkout I actually cleaned the minibar out three times and emptied it into a laundry bag which I then packed. This hotel was the best minibar that I've ever seen, all kinds of rare liquors. The drinks were clinking in my suitcase as I approached the checkout counter, and I will never forget the look of horror on the desk clerk's face as he opened my "folio" and started clicking through to remove the drinks one-by-one from the bill. Since I couldn't carry the drinks on the plane with me, I handed the whole bag to a group of homeless people sitting in front of the train station.

The thing is, I got tired of this within a couple of months. It was great at first, it felt like getting one over on these people who have been ripping me off for decades for a tiny 250ml water. But now, basically I may drink a few things, but I don't bother with the rest. Which is probably what usually happens.

Regarding the previous comment: " Shortly these benefits will be eliminated due to this sort of abuse."

If the perk is given, I see no reason why anyone should feel bad taking full advantage of it. If you buy the drinks, no one care if you consume them in the room or elsewhere, why would it be different is they are given for free?

Leave it there so the next guy can pay $100s for it? Seriously? A person who thinks that way is the same kind of person who would volunteer to pay extra income tax.

It's a perk, so...

A couple of brief notes from a hotel associate:

  1. If you have a perk (e.g. free reign of the minibar), use it. We are not going to judge you for it. And do you really care if other guests do? The perks are for YOU because you earned them.

  2. The loyalty program put this in place after I'm sure estimating the actual projected costs. If they cancel it because they refer to utilizing you earned perks as "abuse," then clearly someone miscalculated. But for now, I'd say you're safe.

  3. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT, abuse your perk by calling for a refill of the minibar above and beyond the normal once a day re-stocking. THAT is abuse.

DO IT...at least once

That's what you pay for right? I agree with taking what you need and leaving the rest as well as only asking it to be restocked once a day versus a couple of times. However, if you're in Vegas and you've got friends coming over, there's no shame in cleaning out the minibar at least once. Ps. @Jetsetcd Ill drink that tonic water for ya, calories be damned.

cooking classes

I don't think so there is any issue about clean out the Hotel minibar.

Be a gentleman,Be an ambassador..

As i'm a hotelier, you shouldn't clean it out the minibar as that shows you are so greedy and not acting like a VIP. That minibar you can clean it out when you are staying a week or so and if they don't refill.Otherwise 1 or 2 days is a shame to clean it out...

Drink/eat away

Drink and eat away my friend.

Cheers, I too agree, it is afterall, earned.

Agree with you

Hotels are increasingly becoming high-tech. And with good reason, People want their 24/7 connectivity and other tech requirements even when they're away from home. So hotels that want to become (or stay) successful are making sure they offer amenities like wireless or even the latest video games, internet bars etc.

Minibar

It's the first thing you always have to refund. People always deny deny deny taking anything out of the mini bar.    I like the trend of not having them in most new hotels.  It is wrong to empty it when you are living in the hotel you are working for. Oops.
