Hotel art. It can be beautiful, weird and—sometimes—stolen. But nothing we've seen has quite topped the computer-generated lady heads that currently greet guests at the Mondrian South Beach.

We first encountered these bug-eyed chicks when we stayed at the hotel two years ago. We loved everything about the Alice-in-white-Wonderland decor. Except maybe these blown-up doll heads. The more we stared at the one in our room (above), the creepier she seemed, and the more the question bumped around in the back of our brains: Who is she and why is she staring at us all the time?

Finally, we asked a publicist for the Morgans hotels and we have an answer...

Kind of. We're still not sure who this lady is (computer or not, surely she is based on a real person, no?) but we do have some insight into why she's on the walls in every room:

In hotel parlance, she is a siren. Apparently she appears in every room in order to protect the guests, "almost like an angel figure"—though we like to think of her as a kick-ass superhero.

While we only encountered these two versions during our stay, there are six variations of the "siren" throughout the hotel. The concept is part of hotel designer Marcel Wander's whimsical Mondrian theme—though we're still glad Marcel drew the line at putting one in the bathroom.

What do you think? Would you like one of these bug-eyed beauties watching over you during your stay? Have you encountered anything like this in the world of hotel-art? Let us know in the comments below...
