The mysterious Flatiron Hotel has been keeping us guessing for quite some time now. The 64-room ghost building has barely had any developments since last September—yet people are still as curious as ever. Like one Danish reader, who writes:

Hello Hotelchatter.

I enjoy your advice and stories regarding hotels around the world everyday. Now I need your advice for my trip to New York. 4 - 14 september. Do you, in your opinion, think it is safe to book Flatiron Hotel Toshi for my dates? Will it be open by then? Bookit.com has a cheap-cheap price for my stay, but if the hotel or staff is not ready.......

Please find it in your heart and busy scedule to answer moi.

Kind regards from Copenhagen

Recently, a handful of companies made bids on the floundering property, though no statements have since been released to confirm anything. It would be safe to assume that the hotel will eventually find a buyer (its location is just too hard to pass up), but to plan on an early September reservation might be pushing it.

What do we know? What we think we know is that the hotel has begun the hiring process. But we also know that many openings get delayed by weeks, or even months, by staff training alone.

Which brings us to our final point. Dear Copenhagen reader, if it's a hotel gamble you're after this September, why not make it the Sanctuary? According to owner Hank Freid, all that's left is to do is train the staff and make sure their S.T.A.R. program is calibrated and ready to go for a September opening.

Considering HotelChatter contributor Chanize spent a night there back in June, and the fact that the Sanctuary sign has officially replaced the old Portland Square one, this would be the safer bet. Rates, though more expensive than the Flatiron, start at $299 for a Superior Queen—actually a better deal than that other Flatiron District-located hotel, the Ace.

Wrong hotel...

I think there's some confusion here:

Hotel Toshi is a hostel near the Flatiron Building (I live around the corner). It, in fact, looks across Fifth Avenue (near 23rd) at the Flatiron Building.

It is different from the Hotel Flatiron at 26th-ish/Broadway, which aside from the illuminated fish in the tank has been a ghost ship we often marvel at on our way to booze at The Breslin (in the Ace).

Copenhagen followup...

I would actually recommend being bold: NYC usually has great deals on the iPhone app HOTEL TONIGHT. Unsold inventory at good boutique hotels (Ace, Gem, etc.) for dirt cheap (summer rates have been below $175 most days). It's a bit of a gamble, but I've never seen a day where there wasn't SOMETHING to grab; very little risk of being shutout.
