How Do You Get to Sleep in a Strange New Hotel Bed?

July 5, 2011 at 10:38 AM | by | Comments (5)

Looking at this, we're already mapping out our best strategy for falling asleep as quick as possible.

Welcome to Unofficial Sleep Week on HotelChatter! An entire week (ok, really just four days) devoted to hotel sleeping habits, hotel beds and hotel amenities designed to help you get the best rest.

What actually inspired this post was a recent Hotels.com survey on the sleeping patterns of travelers in hotels. Some sample discoveries? Ozzies prefer TV to sex, Hong Kong guests like to eat in bed, Indian travelers care the most about the hotel mattress quality, Spaniards like to get frisky and Mexican guests think the hotel beds are better than their ones at home.

The survey also touched upon some other sleep habits of travelers, specifically how they get to sleep in a new hotel bed. While hotels are in a fierce competition to provide the luxest bed in hopes of giving their guests the most supreme sleep possible, sometimes our travel-weary bodies can't adjust to a foreign hotel bed on the first night.

And since good old U.S. of A seems to have been left out of the survey, we thought this was a good time to ask you dear readers how do you get to sleep in a strange new hotel bed?*

Do you....

A) Fall asleep no problem because the hotel mattress and plush linens are far superior than your decades-old bed and Sheets n' Things sheets at home?

B) Indulge in a little (or a lot) nightcap from the minibar or in the lobby bar just to ensure some uninterrupted shut-eye, especially since the rooftop party seems to be going all night?

C) Follow some calming meditation exercises available from the hotel room's on demand yoga channel and then spritz a relaxing lavender spray on your pillow?

D) Pull down the black out shades, break out your sleep mask and pop an Ambien?

E) Read the entire internet front to back on your iPad before falling asleep with the page open to Awfulplasticsurgery.com, er, CNN.com?

Or maybe you have some other routine for achieving deep sleep in a new hotel bed. Whatever it is, share it with us in comments below!

*Of course, this questionnaire isn't limited to U.S. residents. If you got a good sleeping trick or odd sleeping quirk, let us know!

Falling to sleep ... Not

very simply .... I don't
My sales team hates my 3am emails that are grammatically incorrect and very often incoherent as madness takes over.

NO problem sleeping in ANY bed

I travel over 300 nights a year, world-wide, changing hotels every night in my role as global hotels' guru. I never have the SLIGHTEST problem sleeping anywhere. Secrets? Hard exercise twice a day, eat well three times a day and work nonstop.

really depends on the bed....

Reluctantly admit it is A if it is a sumptuous bed as for example Sofitel, anything less and it will have to be B :)

Bed I Like

Depends on the bed usually... I'm from Northern Alberta where there are a ton of cheap hotels (and beds in them) I have found that the bigger hotels are a lot more comfortable. I like a bed like they have at the Grande Prairie Inn Grande Prairie Inn. They have 2 towers for rooms and may be the biggest in the area and have very good beds. While I realize that everyone has their own preference on beds I find this medium - soft bed type the best for my back and sleep.
