We’ve been following the prolonged transformation of Times Square's grimy, budget Portland Square Hotel. Finally rid of the scaffolding, the (nearly) complete, 115-room Sanctuary Hotel is a pricier, but still within-wallet’s reach option. Here’s what HotelChatter sussed out during our stay:

Jump on It: The grand opening isn’t until September, so the hotel isn’t complete, restaurant and bar wise. The previous pics we’ve shown are what the owners are hoping for, but it’s still a construction zone and the second tower and roof top bar aren't completed yet. But the current $179 rate is going faster than the free WiFi speed and gets you a modern, clean room, free workout privileges at either Equinox or Sports/Club LA (your choice) and all the lemon water in the lobby you can drink. Hard to beat for its location and New York’s notorious summer high season rates.

Potential Peep Show: Some rooms directly face Fox Network’s offices. When we left our 7th floor Roman window shades open during business hours for some sunlight, we saw employees at their desks and walking around. We even saw the cleaning lady at 10 pm. So, we're thinking, if we can see them, they can probably see us. Oh, and we made sure to use the fabric curtains when we used the all-glass shower. Sometimes we can be a bit paranoid when traveling alone.

Tougher than Leather: The Sanctuary’s design is based on owner Hank Freid’s yacht layout, and there’s definitely a love affair with red and black as well as leather. Hallways sport red and black carpeting and room doors have leather paneling above them. Inside, the leather fixation continues starting from the luggage rack and padded headboard to the shower stall walls.

You Gots to Chill: The official check-in document specifies “no parties” so leave the Times Square antics outside.

Baby, You’re a S.T.A.R. One thing we’ll say: even though the hotel isn’t officially “open”, they’re already implementing their S.T.A.R. program as much as possible. Pre-arrival, a staff member emails you asking if any special amenities are needed for your room. Our email requested champagne, ice and water to be delivered (summer in the city’s been brutal) and all were in-room upon arrival. And we were only joking about the champagne! (sorta)

Born This Way? We’re not sure if The Sanctuary wants to be an Asian haven or not—since it’s not quite finished. Opulent chandeliers, fireplaces built into the walls, and oversize Asian Buddhas don’t seem to mix well. But we are told more changes are coming into play, including a restaurant and bar that will be owned by an outside company. (Alan Phillips, who designed the pop-up restaurant The Feast that we visited in March, will most likely be involved).

More news about the Sanctuary coming soon!
