Chicago canceled its big Fourth of July fireworks display this year, leaving it to Navy Pier to let the holiday go off with a bang. But you don't have to brave the crowds at the tourist trap to get a front-row seat to the fireworks. Swissotel Chicago can get you a room overlooking all of the Fourth of July festivities.

The hotel offers lakefront rooms that offer a great view of Navy Pier, which means you don't have to fight for a spot among the throngs of people and crane your neck to see the colorful 15-minute display.

Be sure to request a lake-view room. If none are available, you can always head up to the 42nd-floor penthouse pool and gym and see the fireworks from the big windows.

In case you happen to miss Chicago's Fourth of July celebration, you can still see weekly fireworks displays that go off in Navy Pier every Saturday this summer. But if you want to stay on the night of the Fourth, rooms start at $219.

Great Strategy

The only drawback I can see would be if you want to get the full impact of the sounds. For me that's half the fun. But what a comfy "box seat."
