Models or hotel guests?

We didn't love the idea back in 2009 and we're not so in love with it today but regardless, discounted popular American sportswear designer Tommy Hilfiger is opening his own hotel.

The first Hilfiger hotel will open in, predictably, New York. But we may be spared some of the Americana designs and color palettes that have long characterized Hilfiger's preppy clothing line.

The WSJ reports:

Mr. Hilfiger and a business partner have signed a contract to pay $170 million for the Clock Tower office building near Madison Square Park, planning to convert it into a luxury hotel that will cater to a young, affluent crowd. Mr. Hilfiger's former company that is now part of Phillips-Van Heusen Corp. isn't involved in the hotel project.

So that last bit leads us to think technically it's not a Tommy Hilfiger fashion hotel (i.e. no American flag bedspreads and towels) but we're guessing that ole Tommy boy isn't going to stray too far from the red, white and blue mix that made him such a hit in the 90s.

Considering that Hilfiger has been wanting to get in on the hotel game for a while (he even looked at the Hotel Chelsea!), and if all goes well here, there may be more Hilfiger Hotels in our future.

As for when this hotel will open, the deal is not yet done and then construction/renovation will follow sooo...maybe 2014?

WSJ error

I shouldn't be surprised that the WSJ (Newscorp) got this wrong, but I thought I would point out that the building in the report is not "near" Washington Square Park, its ON the park. The only way it could get closer is if it were placed on top of Shake Shack, which would be really really sad.

now my error

I said Washington Sq, when I clearly meant Madison Sq.
