Has Your Housekeeper Ever Left You a Note? Ours Did

Hotel notepads: we're big fans. Sometimes we even take them. But last week we encountered something new on the notepad by our hotel bed--a note from our housekeeper. And it was sweet, to boot!

This is the note we found when we returned to our room late in the day after our first night at the Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Now, there's lots to love here, so let's break it down...

First of all, we were staying three nights but we so often stay just one night at a hotel while traveling that we felt weird not leaving a tip for the housekeeper on that first morning. (Lots of people seem to wait until their last day and leave a tip covering their entire stay then--how about you?)

So, we left a little somethin', and by little we mean a single dollar. We know, it looked kind of lame to just leave a buck and we considered doing the wait-til-the-end-to-tip thing. But... that still felt rude somehow. So, we left the single and knew we'd leave more later.

The fact that we got this cute note thanking us for a measly buck made us feel a tad guilty, but the fact that there even was a note overrode that quick smart. In all our hotel stays over the years, we have never seen a note from the housekeeper, good or bad.

Plus, this one not only thanked us for the tip, but wished us a good vacation! And used the ever-so-charming greeting,"GoodDay".

Oh, and can we talk about the smiley face?!

Clearly, we were utterly charmed and tipped big on check-out day.

Now, tell us: has your housekeeper ever left you a note? What did it say? Spill the beans on handwritten hotel-staff notes in the comments below!

Disclaimer: While MsRebecca was staying at the Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Marriott as a guest of the hotel, she is sure her housekeeper knew nothing about that. Her fellow journalists who were also being hosted did not receive notes from their housekeepers, even when they tipped, so clearly it was the kind act of one special Marriott staff member.

The James NYC

I stayed at The James in NYC in early December 2010. The housekeeper left a nice note saying "Thanks and have a great day and stay in NYC". That was the first time I had ever encountered that type of nice gesture from a hotel's housekeeping staff. All the staff I encountered at The James during my stay were super friendly and helpful.

Seattle

We have gotten several of these at different hotels in Seattle.  We always tip $2 each day and after a few days we got one of these exact notes with smiley faces. They must've learned it at a maid's "how to get more" conference but it doesn't matter, they're cute and sweet.  We've had about 3 of these now.  I like them and it does encourage more tipping and it makes us feel like the maids are making our room extra special.
