The W Hotel, London from Paul Carr on Vimeo.

The other day our friend Paul Carr had a moment about how incredibly expensive London hotels are and how their service is leagues behind the service in America (except for at The Riviera in Vegas.)

Of course, this didn't sit well with London hotels, particularly the W London where Paul was set to film a segment for the BBC FastTrack's program. The hotel abruptly told him they did not allow filming in their rooms. Fortunately, the newer Renaissance St. Pancras does and they stepped into save the day. But still, Paul couldn't shake what the W was hiding. So, with the help of a friend, he went up into a room at the W London on the fifth floor to see just what the W was so afraid of. And here's what he found.

For 450 pounds a night you can get a smallish room with a king bed, a sink along the wall, separate from the loo and a somewhat decent view. Design and amenity-wise, the room is nothing to be ashamed of--there's floor to ceiling windows, the minibar is well-stocked, the bed looks comfy, there are Bliss toiletries in the bath and the TV looks better than the last TV we turned on in a London hotel room.

However, that price is devastating and it seems to be a near-standard rate for the W. We found a rate for tomorrow night for £456 and that's a fully pre-paid rate with absolutely no changes allowed. Meanwhile, over at The Lanesborough, which Paul pointed out has free WiFi, complimentary butler service, and free porn, you can get a room on Wednesday night for just £395. Now that's something the W should be ashamed about.

Watch the video to see Paul and his friend unwrap the W London and its 450 pounds worth of goodies.
