No, Virginia, The Flat Iron Hotel is Not Open Yet

Not the Flat Iron Hotel but rather, The Eventi

One of the most common questions we receive here at HotelChatter is "Where should I stay in New York on a budget?" And sure enough, we received this question again on Tuesday but with a few location parameters and a question about the pending Flat Iron Hotel. So, we thought it was worth checking out.

Virginia in Texas writes:

I am going to be in NYC, I will be at the 230 Fifth Ave building. I am on a BUDGET but I like nice and safe but cool. What is the deal with the Flat Iron Hotel?? ACE?? Then I have to go to Javitz (Convention Center) etc Tuesday through Thursday. So Friday May 20th, check-in. Thursday May 26th, check out. Any suggestions?? I can't spend a million $ a night.

Well regarding the Flat Iron Hotel, the location at 26th and Broadway would be perfect for Virginia. But too bad it's not open. Mad Park News reports that the hotel is ready to open but that the hotel is also looking for a new owner. In the meantime, you still can't make reservations nor can you get a hold of anyone working for/at the hotel. So yeah. Skip this one entirely Virgina!

The ACE is a good choice if it isn't a busy weekend and you can actually get a room for under $399 a night (not the bunk bed ones.) But in further talking to Virgina, she expressed that she didn't really want a party scene or a place where she couldn't get a seat in the lobby. So we have to nix the ACE for those reasons.

Virginia was also curious about Fashion26 on 26th Street and which was recently rebranded as a Hilton. But while there are free cupcakes at check-in and you can earn/use HHonors points we didn't think the hotel lives up to Virginia's "cool" requirement.

So we actually pointed her over to The Eventi. The Kimpton hotel is on a sparse and random block of Sixth Avenue but with the opening of its rooftop plaza (complete with a giant projector screen), not to mention it's wine-tasting hour and free WiFi (for InTouch members), we think the hotel should live up to Virgina's sophisticated yet sensible tastes.

Indeed, Virginia's only problem now is actually getting a room at the hotel. She wrote again to tell us the hotel is booked. D'oh.

Seeing that she might be waitlisted at The Eventi, what other hotels do you recommend for Virgina? Tell us in comments below!

How about Ink48?

For a hotel close to Javits. Similar to Eventi -- both new, both Kimptons -- and it has a huge roof terrace and bar with pretty NYC skyline views.

Or the GEM Midtown West

I actually recommended the GEM midtown west for the portion of her stay when she needed to be near the Javits center. But Ink48 is good too, keep it in the Kimpton family...

Flatiron Mystery

I live near the Flatiron Hotel and walk by it almost daily, mostly out of curiosity.  They recently posted a sign to remind passers by that "WE ARE CLOSED" but also "USPS WE ARE HERE!"  Aside from the giant fish tank, my favorite feature would have to be the bare sink in the corner of the lobby.
