Do You BYOT, Bring Your Own Toiletries?

May 10, 2011 at 2:43 PM | by | Comments (13)

Can you make it on just shampoo, conditioner and body lotion alone?

Last month when we reported that Lather had debuted their new line of eco-friendly hotel toiletries, it spurred a mini-conversation in comments about hotel toiletry habits.

Commenter Viaherlette said that "as a woman, I rarely use them unless they are really good (think Bulgari, Hermes...)" which is a valid point if you're like us and travel with your own face wash, toner, gel, moisturizer and sunscreen. Yes, this is a pain to travel with, we know but that's the price of beauty. Plus, the internet ages you faster than the sun. FACT.

However, no matter what the brand, we always need to use the shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion since we don't bring those along with us. But maybe you do?

We'd probably never BYOT if we knew we were staying in a luxe place that always carried Bulgari, Hermes, C.O. Bigelow, Kiehl's, Red Flower or Fresh, to name a few. But for the places who carry the ubiquitous Aveda or "Made Especially for This Hotel" brands, we'll be packing our TSA-approved toiletries instead.

Open up your cosmetics bag and dopp kits to us! Tell us if you BYOT and what you bring in comments below!

Love me some free toiletries

I always bring face wash, moisturizer and my own soap--in fear that my skin won't react well to the hotel's bar. But I always leave the full-size shampoo, conditioner and lotion at home so I can test out the hotel's toiletries.

Yes, I BYOT

But I collect the toliets, they are great for airport travel, short weekends or cleaning your combs and brushes if you are sensitive to the products.

Yes, BYOT...most folks like what they like, the end.

I have the same problem

I BYOT AND I take the hotel toiletries home with me. I have a big bucket in our linen closet full of hotel toiletries that i keep saving for non-existent house guests and "what if i run out of shampoo?"

Well, from a guy's perspective...

I love the freebies, especially Bliss (W Hotels), Aromatherapy Associates (Mandarin Oriental), Remede (St. Regis) and Miller Harris (Fairmont).  I HATE Marriott, Sheraton and Hyatt's products, and Westin's are OK.  Like Juliana, I have drawers full of the stuff, but I actually use them.  Saves big bucks.

Another guy here...

I definitely use the hotels soap and shampoo and bring my own face wash, shaving, items, etc. InterContinental and Crowne Plaza have great products with a nice scent. I'm actually not a fan of any of the Aveda products hotels carry, but I'll use them anyway. Marriott and Holiday Inn's Bath & Body Works line doesn't do much for me either, but again - I'm not picky - if it's in the room, I plan to use it.

BYO...some things

I always bring my own face moisturizer, sunscreen and lotion. I've run into hotels lately that haven't had lotion-wtf? I love to see what toiletries hotels have and I prefer namebrand over generic. L'occitane, Kiehl's and Malin + Goetz are favorites, but I'm also partial to hotels that have their own fancy-packaged ones. Like Missoni Hotels or The Peninsulas.

Aveda

Usually when I see Aveda products, my heart sinks. And I only like especially made for the hotel toiletries if it like @Jetsetcd said, Missoni or a luxury brands'. Made Especially for the Radisson will not cut it. ;)

What to do with extra toiletries

A Facebook fan gave a really good tip on what to do with all those extra hotel toiletries I've been saving up for no good reason--give them to a women's shelter. Going to do that this weekend. (A men's shelter would also work!)

too many toiletries

Women's shelters would love them.

If it's eco-friendly, then go!

I understand that each one of us have some kind of personal ritual on this, and I totally respect that...

But due to the seriousness of environment issue that mankind is facing right now, every ounce of help is extremely needed.

BYOT

I always bring my own. I take the ones from the hotel back with me. After I collect a bagful I donate them to the homeless shelter downtown. I figure I paid for them someone should use them.

Disappointing

Juliana,

A little constructive feedback.  Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's a quality product.  All of the brands you listed that you would use are garbage.  If you actually took the time to look at the ingrediants you would see they are packed with fillers, preservatives, and nothing that is actually healthy for your skin.  If I was staying somewhere that I believed gave a crap about what they were putting in their rooms above and beyond the label, and the bottle said it was especially made for this hotel, I may actually use the product because that means they partnered with someone to design and formulate what they were looking for instead of just putting the "popular" label in the room.  Don't sell the hotel short for actually trying to be different and put a quality product in the room.  Food for thought.
