While the Aloft concept is pretty cool, and we welcome their addition to the NYC hotel scene, let's not forget that this is downtown Brooklyn. Not Williamsburg, not Park Slope, or Prospect Heights, or even pretty-as-a-postcard Brooklyn Heights. The hotel is in a business district with lots of city government buildings, schools, blinged-out jewelry vendors and sneaker shops lining Fulton Street Mall.
If we wanted to pay $300 a night, we'd cross the Manhattan or Brooklyn bridge and at least situate ourselves in a more cozy, restaurant-filled neighborhood. We'd probably even be able to pay less for that in Manhattan if we went the Quikbook route, tried a blind booking site or waited for a hot flash sale.
Since we'd like to leave this on a positive note, though, we did find this photo of the new Aloft's pool on Flickr. Who knew?! We seem to have missed this silver lining on the hotel's own website, but we're happy to know that there's a place to cool off this summer.
That is, if we can bring ourselves to fork out $300 to stay so close to Flatbush Avenue...
