Atlanta Will Soon Be a Short a W Hotel (But There Are Still Three Others in Town)

No city ever needs four W Hotels so last year when we heard that the W Atlanta Perimeter would be closing, we weren't very shocked. In fact, we were kind of glad, especially since we heard the hotel might be rebranded as an Aloft.

But now that closing day is just around the corner, the hotel is going the independent route.

A tipster let us know that the hotel will be closing on June 1 and indeed, there is a note on the hotel's website with this change. The hotel will go by the boringly named Atlanta Perimeter Hotel and Suites but will remain a Starwood hotel and all the room amenities, decor and services will stay the same.

Our tipster tells us that the Aloft renovation won't happen because it requires too much work and there is already a Westin and a Sheraton nearby. It's possible that the hotel may end up as a Four Points but our tipster surmises, and we agree, that Starwood will probably just dump the property as soon as it gets a chance. After all, there are still THREE other W Hotels to stay at when visiting Atlanta.

Awww...that makes me sad.

In 1999, when the W chain had just launched, the W Perimeter was just the W Atlanta. It was also the first W I stayed in.

I was there on a business trip. Everyone other guest at the hotel looked like a model; I felt a little inferior and was amazed at the caliber of guest the hotel attracted. At check-out I learned that during my stay, they'd been hosting a modeling conference...so every other guest there WAS, in fact, a model. Or the model's manager.

That stay, and that hotel, was why I fell in love with the W chain. Sad to see it go. But it seems almost every W I stayed in over the years, except for San Francisco and Seattle, has gone independent or been sold to another chain.
