The Dream Downtown Nightclub's $30 Million Nightmare
We've been waiting a seriously long time for the Dream Downtown to open and last month, we got word that we would now have to wait until Summer 2011. While the construction job looks about done, there's some drama going on behind the scenes. Yes, another hip new NYC hotel is having drama behind the scenes just before opening. Yawn.
This drama apparently deals with the nightclub aspect of the Dream flagship hotel, which is now in partnership with Wyndham Hotels.
According to its website, the hotel has plans for a restaurant, MSR, from neurologist-chef,
Dr. Miguel Sánchez Romera (hmmm...interesting, we'll have to explore that in detail later) as well as a rooftop lounge and beach club. Yes, beach club in lower Manhattan! But who is running the sandy enclave is now in dispute.
The NY Post reports:
Emm Group, owners of Meatpacking hotspots Abe & Arthur's and SL, are suing Chatwal for $30 million, claiming they agreed on a huge deal to run hospitality operations for the new venue opening this summer -- but were then ditched after the hotel's owners secretly made a deal with rival Strategic Group, the impresarios behind hot Chelsea lounge Avenue and club Marquee.
The owner here is Sant Singh Chatwal, Vikram's father, and who the Emm Group also claims ripped off their designs for the bar.
Feuds between nightclub management groups seem to be pretty common these days, almost as common as hotel delays! Still, we wouldn't be surprised if the Dream Downtown opens this summer with the "dining & nightlife" to follow a few months after.
