After circling the drain for several years, even closing most of its rooms during slower times, the Sahara Las Vegas will close for good on May 16. The LA Times reports:

Chief Executive Sam Nazarian, the Los Angeles nightclub impresario who purchased the Moroccan-themed casino in 2007 and vowed to restore its hipness, said in a statement that running the property was "no longer economically viable." While the statement said Nazarian's company was mulling options for the 59-year-old resort, "including a complete renovation and repositioning," it gave no details or timeframe for such plans.

For now, any guests with reservations after May 16 will probably be shuffled off to an MGM property, according to VegasChatter.

Although the loss of jobs will be another blow to the Las Vegas economy and community, Vegas visitors (except for maybe the Nascar folk) aren't missing much.

While it was nice to have $25 rooms (and in some cases $1 rooms), the hotel was sad and depressing to stay in, let alone gamble in. No one could feel like a winner amongst such a defeated property.

Not even its glamorous rat pack history could salvage a recent Hotelchatter visit last December, although the views were pretty. You can also check out what VegasChatter has long thought of the Sahara here.

Nazarian has promised to turn the Sahara into an hip SLS Hotel which would be an awesome addition to this end of the Strip. But getting financing for it is apparently difficult at this time. And as the old saying goes-- no money, no (hotel) honey!

dark times of Las Vegas

This is not the era of reinvention, when landmarks like the Sands and Dunes were replaced by the Venetian and Bellagio. These are the dark times, when a property that closes stays closed.
