Morgans Hotels Expanding Delano Internationally and Adding Another New York Hotel

Morgans Hotel Group isn't waiting for the Mondrian Soho to open on February 22 to get moving on its next projects: the brand has signed on to manage three new hotels, including a Delano Cabo San Lucas and a Delano Aegean Sea in Turkey.

In Mexico, the Delano will have 114 rooms and 23 "branded residences" along with a restaurant, bar and spa. It's currently slated for an early 2013 opening. In Turkey, plans call for a 200-room and 50-residence resort with multiple bars and restaurants a spa and extensive water sports to take advantage of local, favorable windsurfing conditions. It's also planned for 2013.

A press release says that these projects "will be just the tip of the iceberg of our future international expansion." and also buries this intriguing bit of news: A third, 175-room hotel will open in 2014 on Manhattan's west side, near the High Line, and the company says it's already "under development" and "will be branded with one of Morgans' existing brands." Ames New York, anyone?

A Delano outside of South Beach does not a Delano

 While the Delano glimmers in what perhaps was the hey day of South Beach circa 94-97. (Who can forget Madonna showing up for her Bday party with then Baby Daddy/Trainer) The thought of a Delano in Cabo San Lucas shows how out of touch the Morgan's Group has become with the industry.  

When Mr. Ian Schrager took a chance on South Beach, (everyone thought Miami Was just a fad) it paid off with celeb new year parties, a designer gym and a standard for brunch on Sundays. It is sad to think that the Morgan's group would not opt for lesser known but more interesting emerging glam hotspots like Jose Ignacio in Uruguay or something along the Costa Brava perhaps housing a restaurant by Mr. Ferran Adria. Instead we get get liquor served in gallon drums at a swim up pool in Mexico.
