We like to keep it fun but informative here at HotelChatter so our newest series, What is This? is devoted to odd-looking items in hotel rooms that upon first glance look as if they serve only a decorative purpose. But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.

You'd be surprised at how easily we amuse ourselves in an unfamiliar hotel room. Flipping mystery light switches. Opening closets. Experimenting with the thermostat. The possibilities are endless. But on a recent visit to Brooklyn's second-newest addition, the Fairfield Inn and Suites Brooklyn, we were immediately drawn to the brightest thing in the room—this candy red furniture piece, tucked daintily under the desk. But what does it do?

Why, it's a movable ottoman! Upholstered in slick red leather with two matching metal handles, this baby can coast all over the place. And, at the same time, throw some color into these otherwise slightly gray-heavy rooms.

Want to put it on top of your bed? Be our guest!

Want to drag it into the bathroom as your own personal toilet seat foot-prop? Nobody's stopping you. The point is, an under-the-desk ottoman doesn't do anyone any good. So it's up to you to position it in juuust the right spot. And as we said earlier, the possibilities are endless.

ottoman

Does it match the desk chair? If so, that's pretty cool.

Yup!

The three red items that popped in the space were: the ottoman, the desk chair, and a little red neck pillow on the bed.

Thumbs up to any hotel that provides you furniture that you can easily adjust to your preference.
