According to the hotel's Facebook page, which provides a comprehensive account of exactly how, when, and where the burglary took place—plus some scene-by-scene screenshots from the hotel's security cameras—Maura simply posed as a member of the hotel's PR agency. That's it!
By researching the names of everyone involved in the competition (managers, marketing, publicity, etc), she managed to trick the hotel into believing she was there to "move the painting to the next hotel." A phone call to her accomplice, who posed as a manager of the operation, helped to erase some of the hotel's suspicions, and before she knew it, Maura was being escorted out of the hotel to her car.
This is quite possibly the coolest hotel contest we've heard of yet, and the strategy involved in winning makes for a pretty awesome story.
A comment on the hotel's Twitter feed also gave us a chuckle. @MartinKay4 wrote:
"#ArtSeriesHotels #stealbanksy idea is great. Good reason to go to Aus --the two things i love: art and stealing it from Australians."
As the hotel tweeted last week, there's still one more to go! "Pulp Fiction" is hanging up somewhere in Melbourne. And it's gonna take a pretty crafty robber to get it home! (Or just someone with a nice business suit and a friend with great phone manners).
Stay tuned...
