All of the big five-star resorts and convention-ready hotels may be off the highway between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, but if you want to experience the activity of a Mexican town and still be a short stroll from the beach, you need to stay in Playa Del Carmen.

You won't find the Fairmonts, Rosewoods and Tides of the world here, but you will find smaller, independent hotels lining the beach and streets off of Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue). The newest--although actually a longtime resident, now coming out of an expansion and renovation--is Acanto Hotel & Suites.

As you can see from our gallery, the upgrades include a bunch of family-friendly amenities including flatscreen TVs, iPod docking stations, and a close to full kitchen. Some suites also come with rooftop space where you can grill outdoors or gaze out over Playa's beach from a jacuzzi.

There is a small pool in Acanto's Hacienda-style courtyard--it's a gorgeous blue color but located right behind the front desk. If you prefer the expanse of the ocean, just take the discount card supplied by Acanto down to the nearby beach club where you can set up on a lounger with food and beverage service.

Introductory rates for the new incarnation of Acanto start at $176 per night for double occupancy--but if you follow Acanto on Twitter, keep your eyes peeled for promotions, including the chance to win free nights by tweeting about your stay at the hotel and your favorite local Playa restaurants, or reduced rates of $99 a night as part of a #TravelTuesday promo.
