Have You Ever Had an Unexpected Animal Encounter During a Hotel Stay?

November 8, 2011 at 10:29 AM | by | Comments (4)

Cute Hotel Animals! And not the official pet kind like Kimpton's Goldfish or Directors of Pet Relations or the Canine Ambassadors at Fairmont Hotels. We're talking animals in the wild. If by 'wild' you mean the grounds of a luxury hotel...

It dawned us recently that we've spotted a few furry and feathered creatures on recent hotel stays -- pictured above are the baby deer outside our casita at Enchantment Resort in Sedona, the coati we saw rooting around for snacks at Grand Velas Riviera Maya, and one of the many birds who call the lagoon of Rosewood Mayakoba home. (A Cormorant, if we remember correctly...)

Not pictured: the crocodile our next-door neighbor at Rosewood Mayakoba spotted lurking under her over-water lagoon villa. Gulp.

Often these creatures are still trawling the hotel grounds because the resort's developers and owners are honoring their environments and have programs in place to help protect the wildlife that was there before high-rate-paying guests. That makes us feel good, even when the critter we spot has a mouthful of very large teeth.

So, tell us: What animals have you spotted during a hotel stay recently? Again, we don't mean the adorable, four-legged kind who have jobs we'd want ourselves, but the out-in-the-wild kind, who roam free even if their version of 'into the wild' includes chomping on stray room-service crumbs.

Tell us all about your hotel animal sightings in the comments below!

Costa Rica!

I had gone to bed really early one night in Costa Rica, but heard what I thought were the guests next door coming back in.  I get it, this is a vacation spot and a lot of people honeymoon here.  Maybe they had a little too much to drink at the bar tonight.  But a minute later, they were still really loudly talking by my door.  I had no idea what they were saying though since it was really muffled and I was already asleep and was only half conscious.  Another minute later, they only seemed to get louder and I was becoming pretty awake at this point from the noise.  Trust me, it's not that easy to wake me up.  And in my half-awake, half-asleep state, I realize that it's too loud to be from the next room.  So, I suddenly jump up because I'm freaked out someone's in my room.  I suddenly see some movement through the glass sliding door to the patio/deck area and I realize, "Holy crap.  There are monkeys raiding my mini fridge!"
The monkeys were so smart and knew where the mini fridge was and had opened the fridge and making a bunch of noise screaming at each other!  Oh god.  Thank goodness I didn't have anything in the fridge other than a couple of tea packet, which they tore open and threw all over the patio/deck area.  But for a good two minutes, I sat upright in my bed, scared to move because in my bewildered "just woken up" state, I couldn't remember if I had locked the glass door or not and was afraid the monkeys wouldn't be placated by my empty fridge and would try to come inside the room.  I never would have considered monkeys animals I'm afraid of, but I sure do now!  Thankfully, they got bored with my empty fridge pretty fast and left, but boy, let's just say it wasn't easy to fall back asleep after that little incident!

Another story: I had a bit of insomnia and still wasn't asleep at around 1:30 am one night.  But I'm in bed and trying when I hear a "plop."  After my incident with finding a bug in my bed and flipping out, I desperately reach for the light switch.  I flip on the light and put on my glasses and holy shit, there's a frog in my bed right by my pillow.  It jumps up and goes onto my headboard.  Seriously, what am I supposed to do when there's a frog in my bed?!?  I tried getting a cup and cupping over it, but because the headboard isn't flat, I couldn't cover it up.  And at one point, it jumped a bit and I was just freaked out it would hop near me.  So, now I pulled all the sheets and blankets off of the bed and moved to the couch.  Yup, I'm in a suite at a hotel and I'm sleeping on the couch.

Yup, exciting times in Costa Rica!

Do daddy longlegs count?

I saw one of those in the bathtub the other week. Eeek!
