Like it or not, the holiday season has officially begun. And no one enjoys the holiday season more than hotels. From now through New Year's Eve, we'll be featuring all the holiday hotel news, deals, events and over the top decorations, we think are the best (or the worst.) Got a question about booking a hotel over the holidays or what to do when staying in a hotel over the holidays? Let us know!

The holidays make hotels do crazy things. Like erecting Christmas trees adorned with money or oversized gingerbread houses or life-sized chocolate Santas (nom, nom.) So it comes as little surprise that the Shangri-La Pudong Hotel in Shanghai, China attempted yesterday to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest yule log cake.

The hotel's 80 chefs, along with another 70 workers, initially set out to build a yule log cake of 888 meters which started at the hotel's Grand Tower lobby and crossed the entire length of the River Wing lobby by going up and down stairs. However, when the final measurements were taken, the cake literally took the cake at 1068 meters long. Success!

The cake used 752 organic eggs, 333kg of chocolate, 869kg of wheat flour, 288kg of icing sugar, 169 kg of cane sugar and 526lt of cream, amongst other staggering amounts of baking ingredients. Eee, we're starting to feel a little sick.

If you were hoping to get a piece of the yule log on your next visit to Shanghai, you are out of luck. The hotel sold pieces of the cake to the public for RMB 2 a slice and it sold out under three hours. All proceeds will be donated to support the medical needs and treatment of four children in need of chemotherapy at the Shanghai Children’s Hospital of Fudan University. Now, that feels good.
