Most people come to the ritzy Montage Laguna Beach to take advantage of its incomparable location along the stunning SoCal coast. During a recent visit, though, we actually came to experience the resort’s comprehensive wine program. Not only does it have 7 sommeliers on staff among its three restaurants managing a list of over 45,000 bottles of 2,100 wines, but it also holds a weekly wine-tasting for guests and locals called the Artistry of Wine series.

Every Sunday from 2:00-4:00pm, the resort hosts the intimate (capped at about 20 guests), casual Artistry of Wine tasting. Each week, the Montage’s team of sommeliers focuses on a wine region from around the world or a grape varietal, and selects about four different wines made there or with that certain grape to share with guests, along with a specially selected plate of cheeses (from the resort’s cheese gallery), cured meats, fruit and nuts, and maybe even a hunk of honeycomb.

During our visit, we were treated to a selection of wines from the south of Italy, and were shown on a map where each came from, walked through the distinctive characteristics of the estates that produced them, the varietals in them, and the foods they pair best with...along with plenty of free time to chat with our tasting mates as well.

Australia's Margaret River was also recently featured, and coming up in October, guests can look forward to Rieslings from around the world, Super Tuscans from Italy, and intriguing White Blends that go beyond a typical white Bordeaux. Reservations are recommended since it tends to be a popular event that's open both to hotel guests and the public, and space is limited.

The wine-tasting menu costs $35 per person and includes four pours and a plate of accompaniments, and guests can also opt to enjoy a full glass or bottle of any of the selections for an additional charge (noted on the day's menu).

Rates at the Montage Laguna Beach start at $645 a night in October.

Full disclosure: Eric Rosen was a guest of the Montage Laguna Beach for one night, but all opinions expressed are entirely his own.
