Hello Kitty Is Outside The W South Beach, But Why Is She Crying?

Last night, while cutting past the W South Beach to reach the boardwalk, we spied something we hadn't seen at the hotel before. Some cute friends loitering outside that were instantly familiar and yet so incongruous outside the sleek, modern hotel. It was Hello Kitty and Miffy! (And their friend in the background. Anyone know his or her name?)
Upon closer inspection, however, we noticed that our friends were weeping. What could be wrong with being outside the W on such a warm 'winter' evening? Were they denied access to WALL? Couldn't afford to check into a cabana like LeBron?
No, no, no. The sculptures are, of course, art, and were installed outside the property back in December for Art Basel.
The trio--the work of artist Tom Sachs--has a history of this kind of behavior. Back in 2008 they were nabbed hanging around outside Lever House in New York.
We're not sure how long they plan to stay in South Beach, but we have to say, we like the fluffy vibe they add to the cool exterior of the W.
Like art? There's plenty more of it inside the hotel, too--serious stuff like Warhols, Hirsts, Basquiats, and a Christopher Wool painting we love that hangs above the Living Room bar.
