Why Do Ian Schrager and Andre Balazs Want The Hotel Chelsea?

It looks like Andre Balazs has a bit of an obsession with the spooky Bohemian outpost The Hotel Chelsea. Reports had him yet again visiting the for-sale property last week. But he's not the only one.

Now today The NY Post reports that Ian Schrager was also spotted touring the hotel again after having previously passed on it a few months ago. But we have to ask, Why?

We get that the hotel has an amazing history, especially with the art and music crowd, but it is a troubled property with vociferous tenants who are still determined to bring back the hotel's longtime manager, Stanley Bard, even though he was ousted two years ago.

Why would Schrager or Balazs want to even deal with this? Especially if they have ambitious plans for turning it into a "modern boutique hotel" (Schrager) or "Chateau Marmont East" (Balazs.)

Yes, we know that we ourselves gave up 5 Positive Selling Points for the hotel back in October but the new owners would have to be willing to work with the existing tenants and we somehow think that Balazs and Schrager's famous friends might find this aspect of their hotel stay a little "unsavory." After all, it hasn't even worked out that well for the budget, bohemian runaway's home away from home, The Jane. We can't imagine celebrities would like it.

We guess the only way we'd approve a boutique hotel in the Hotel Chelsea is if Schrager and Balazs partnered up to do this together just for the sheer novelty of it all. But still, about those tenants....
