The word is out: the hotel formerly known as the Renaissance Atlanta Downtown Hotel will officially become the Hotel Meliá Atlanta on October 15.

When we first heard the news that Sol Meliá was coming to America, we still weren't sure which of the company's brands would be taking over in Atlanta. But we were happy to hear it's a Meliá, since it has a good track record in Europe (especially in Spain) and in Mexico and South America.

We can't wait to see how the vacation-oriented experience of these hotels translates into a business hub like Atlanta.

While guests checking in this fall aren't likely to see huge changes from the Renaissance days, the property's owner, Fundus America, is investing $35 million in renovations, which should be completed by 2013.

Meanwhile, the folks at Meliá also hope that the Atlanta opening will provide a boost that will spur further development in the U.S. Another of Sol Meliá's brands, Tryp, is also primed for growth, and has partnered with Wyndham to create a new Tryp by Wyndham brand in the U.S. and other major markets.

For a sneak peek at what Meliá has in store Stateside, rooms at Hotel Meliá Atlanta start at just $108 a night from October 15.

Looking forward to the re-opening...

I used to stay here when it was a Penta.

It's convenient to Georgia Tech and the Fox Theater, and the North Avenue subway station is a block away.

The location is a bit odd - to get to Downtown or Midtown, you have to weigh the benefits of a cab versus a one or two-stop subway ride.  It's a bit too far to walk if you're dressed for a nice restaurant or a nightclub.

But this does mean that each of the rooms (with private balconies) has a great view.  The rooms face north and south and all the tall buildings nearby are to the east.  No airshafts, no back alleys, no looking in an office building window wondering if they're looking back.
