Last Call For The Edison Hotel's Rum House in Times Square

Following a tip from fellow travel writer Paul Brady, we found ourselves perched at the bar of Rum House on Saturday night—to escape the Times Square crowds but also to bid farewell. The old-timey dive—one of the few refuges from overpriced theater joints and overpriced hotels in the neighborhood—is closing on September 26.
According to the folks at Eater NY, the bar lost its lease earlier this summer. A bartender told Brady that it will be replaced by "another bar. More expensive" but the scene was too somber during our visit for us to ask any further questions about the future. Our bartender spent a lot of time reminiscing with a group of regulars in the corner, and this sign above the bar almost made us weep into our cheap beer.

Hotel Edison may not top our list of Times Square hotels to recommend to tourist friends in town, but the shuttering of Rum House makes our list of Times Square bars worth popping into eminently shorter.
After all, where does this leave us? With yesteryear hotspots like the Paramount Hotel and the bizarre fishbowl bar (deserted when we passed by around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday) at the W Times Square, that's where ...
