Do Not Confuse the Hotel Athenee Paris With the Plaza Athenee Paris

Wow, the Plaza Athenee is looking cheap at the moment. €243, really? It must be a mistake. Book it immediately!

Oh. Ok. Looks like the Plaza Athenee is going to get a little narked about this one – because it’s got a namesake opening up in the same city.

The Hotel Athénée is just off the Place de la Madeleine near the Champs Elysees and has been designed by Jacques Garcia, who also did La Mamoumia in Marrakech as well as the Costes and Fouquets Barriere in Paris.

According to the website (and our high school French):

The space has been structured with a large gallery used as a succession of meeting rooms which allows one to savour the intimacy, secrecy and mystery of the places.

The salons are like a screen of sensuality slap bang in the heart of Paris.

Ooh la la!

From the hotel’s Facebook page, it looks like it used to be a 20 roomed hotel called the Hotel de l’Athénée, so it’s more a total refurbishment of the place than a brand new gaffe. And from the looks of its cached website, the refurb can’t come soon enough.

The rooms look much, much better – pretty small but with fancy wallpaper that appears to be different in every room, flatscreen TVs and all the good stuff you’d expect

The website says that it’ll be opening “late August” but it’s also taking reservations (that €243 we mentioned earlier) from 17 August. Well, technically, that’s ‘late’, isn’t it?

this is one of my pet peeves

i hate hotels similar names to famous hotels but are otherwise unrelated. just name it something different! stand out from the crowd!

about that name.

FYI :
The Hotel Athenee was completely redecorated, but the name is absolutely not new : same since 1930. It is a historic reference to the Athenee Theater, a beautiful place, close to the hotel.
Best regards.
