The Spaniards are coming to the U.S., first stop: ATL. Travelers in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean may recognize the Sol Meliá flag, and soon Americans will get to know it as well, with news that the company will take over management of the Renaissance Atlanta Downtown Hotel.

Marriott had already announced that it would drop the Renaissance branding from the property on September 30, but on Friday, media including the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported that Sol Meliá would make its U.S. debut with the property.

So far there is no word on which of the Sol Meliá brands will land in Atlanta—Gran Melia Hotels & Resorts, Meliá Hotels and Resorts, Sol Hotels, TRYP Hotels, or ME by Meliá. Although one hotel consultant expects it will be a Meliá—"a three- to four-star level brand, on par with a Marriott or Renaissance brand."

The Renaissance will continue to operate as is, and remain open during the transition, which will probably include some renovations. More formal details are expected on September 1.

Our favorite part of this news? The promise of joining Sol Meliá's Mas Rewards program, and racking up enough points for stays at sister properties such as ME Cabo and Gran Melia Puerto Rico.

Business trips to Atlanta just got a bit more enticing, no?

It won't be a TRYP Hotel

That brand was recently purchased by Wyndham Worldwide.
